BRISTOL HIGHLIGHTS Brigstowe - the place of the bridge. A colourful city and port with a thousand years of history. By walking with your guide through the city centre, old town, markets and historic harbour you can hear about the personalities, the stories and events that over centuries helped form Bristol into the energised and successful city of today. We will pass and talk about many of Bristol’s most famous landmarks en route. A circular tour lasting about two hours.
BRISTOL MERCHANTS AND THE SLAVE TRADE. Bristol was much involved in the ‘Triangular Trade’ during most of the 18th century and it brought great wealth to the city. This walk follows the course of the trade by looking at local landmarks mainly in the harbour, Redcliffe and old town areas. Hear of the motivations, the characters involved and chart the course led by local non-conformists towards Abolition.
CLIFTON BRIDGE AND CLIFTON VILLAGE A stroll through an area much developed during the 18th and 19th centuries when it became the fashionable place to live for the nouveau riche. We will see splendid Georgian architecture, the famous Suspension Bridge, hear about its Spa and when you could take the funicular railway from Hotwells to Clifton.
BRUNEL’S BRISTOL A revolutionary steamship, a railway and its station and a beautiful suspension bridge. Hear about the incredible Victorian engineer whose local design achievements are legendary. Follow this trail and find out about the man, his work and his life.
REDCLIFFE & THE HISTORIC HARBOUR Merchant trade and a great variety of successful manufacturing industries created much prosperity for the historic harbour areas of Bristol & Redcliffe with the magnificent St Mary Redcliffe church at it’s centre. This walk will take in areas of the city which have now more recently evolved into an entirely different environment.
BRISTOL’S HISTORIC WINE MERCHANTS Since the 12th century Bristol has had important links with the wine trade. Later involvement in the sherry and port wine trade made certain brands household names. This walk traces the history of the trade from those early days through the city centre, and old town into the historic harbour. It may be possible to arrange a small tasting at a well known Wine Merchant's en route.
MEDIEVAL BRISTOL ‘Brigstowe’ the settlement by the bridge. A walk through the atmospheric streets of the old town where merchants traded and churches flourished centuries ago. Then follow the river a short distance passing the remains of Bristol Castle before finishing at Temple Church.
